Monthly website services vs. owning your site
Published October 30, 2026
Full-service companies like Hibu, Thryv, and similar providers will build and run your website for you, which sounds great until you notice two things: the bill never stops, and the site stays theirs. Here is the honest difference between renting your website every month and buying one you own.
| Monthly website service | Frankford & Marsh | |
|---|---|---|
| Who builds it | They do, for you | We do, for you, from your public information |
| Cost | Every month, often a few hundred to over a thousand, forever | One-time $995, no monthly bill for the site |
| Who owns the site | It stays on their platform | You do, outright, on your own domain |
| If you stop paying | The site generally comes down | It stays yours; move it anywhere |
| Your domain | Often tied to them | Registered in your name, transferable out free |
What a monthly website service really is
These are full-service providers: you pay a monthly fee and they build, host, and run a site for you. The convenience is real. The catch is that you are renting. The site lives on their platform, the payment continues for as long as you want to stay online, and over a few years you can spend many times what a site is worth while never owning the thing you paid for.
What owning your site changes
Frankford & Marsh is just as done-for-you: we build the whole site from your real business information, put it live on your own domain, and handle the hosting, security, and technical parts. The difference is what you walk away with. You pay once, the domain is in your name, and the site is yours. There is no monthly bill for the site, and nothing disappears if you ever stop working with us.
The math over three years
A monthly service at even $300 a month is $3,600 a year, or more than $10,000 over three years, and at the end you still do not own the site. Frankford & Marsh is a flat one-time $995, your domain and first year of hosting included. After the first year, keeping it online is $199 a year for hosting, not a monthly rental, and the site stays yours the whole time.
When a monthly service makes sense
To be fair: if you want one company handling marketing, ads, listings, and the site all bundled, and the monthly cost is comfortable, a full-service provider can be convenient. If all you actually need is a real, professional website that works and that you own, you are paying monthly for a lot you may not use.
Already on a monthly service and want out?
You can switch without a gap. We build your new site, you review it, and it goes live on your own domain only once you like it. Because you will own it and the domain, there is nothing holding you to anyone, and the monthly bill stops once you cancel the old service.
See yours first, free
You do not have to decide in the abstract. We build a free preview of your own site from your public information before you pay anything. Look it over, change whatever you want, and make it live only if you love it.
