Small business website red flags (and how to pay safely)

Published October 30, 2026

Plenty of businesses have paid for a website and ended up with nothing good to show for it: a site they never saw before paying, a domain they do not actually own, or a monthly bill they cannot escape. Here are the warning signs to watch for, and the simple rules that keep you safe. Frankford & Marsh is built around those rules, so this is also an honest look at how we work.

Red flag 1: you have to pay in full before you see anything

If you are asked to hand over the full price for a site you have not laid eyes on, you are taking all the risk. The safe way is to see the finished site first. We build a free preview of your own site from your public information before you pay anything, and you only decide once you can see exactly what you are getting.

Red flag 2: the domain ends up in someone else's name

Your web address is yours, or it should be. Some builders and freelancers register the domain in their own account, which is hard to get back if they disappear or you want to move on. Always ask whose name the domain is in. With us it is registered in your name from the start, and you can take it with you for free, any time.

Red flag 3: a monthly plan you cannot leave

Many website tools charge every month for as long as the site is up, and the site comes down if you stop paying. That is not ownership, it is rent. Ours is a one-time $995 and the site is yours. There is no monthly bill for it; keeping it hosted after the first year is optional, never a trap.

Red flag 4: the price keeps moving

A quote that grows as the project goes, or surprise charges for basic changes, is a sign the deal was never clear. Ask for a flat, written price up front. Ours is one flat $995, agreed before anything happens, with your domain and first year of hosting included.

Red flag 5: no real company or person behind it

If you cannot tell who you are paying or reach a human when something breaks, be careful. Frankford & Marsh is a service of Great Work LLC, a registered U.S. company, your payment is handled by Stripe so we never see your card, and someone answers when you email or call.

The simple version

See it before you pay. Own your domain. No monthly trap. Flat, clear price. A real company you can reach. If a deal has all five, you are safe. If it is missing one, ask why before you pay.

See your site first, free

The surest way to not get burned is to see exactly what you would get, for free, before any money changes hands. We will build you a preview of your own site from your public information, and you only go live, and only pay, if you love it.

Common questions

How do I avoid getting burned when paying for a website?

Protect yourself with three rules: see the finished site before you pay, make sure your domain is registered in your own name, and avoid being locked into a monthly plan you can't leave. Frankford & Marsh is built around exactly that: we build a free preview of your site first, you only pay the one-time $995 once it is actually live, the domain is yours, and there is no monthly bill for the site.

Is it safe to pay for a website online?

It is when a few things are true: the company is real and findable, payment runs through a trusted processor like Stripe so no one handles your card directly, and you are not paying in full for something you have not seen. Frankford & Marsh is a service of Great Work LLC, a registered U.S. company; checkout is handled by Stripe; and you see the whole site free before any charge.

What are the warning signs of a bad website deal?

Watch for: being asked to pay in full before you see anything, the builder registering the domain in their own name instead of yours, a monthly plan that the site disappears from if you stop paying, pricing that keeps changing, and no real company or person behind it. Each one leaves you with less control or a bigger bill than you expected.

Do I own my website and domain if someone builds it for me?

You should, but it depends on how they set it up, so ask before you start. With some builders and some freelancers the domain or the site lives in their account and is hard to recover. With Frankford & Marsh the domain is registered in your name and the site is yours outright, with no lock-in; you can take it with you at any time for free.
